When Did Fat Become the Worst Thing You Could Be?

All of us are stressed. No one knows what to do with themselves in the time of Quarantine. I’ve seen the social media posts about all the baking, what people are binge watching, and the struggles as well. There’s also the negativity. One of my issues I’ve noticed is the fat-phobic posts and comments.
It’s played off as a joke. A lighthearted meme or post. To fat people this isn’t a joke. When did it become a sin to be one of us? People might be thinking why I decided to write this post. For the people who read me, they know I’m body and fat positive in real life and in my stories.
Every body is worthy of love and respect. Bodies whatever their size aren’t the fodder for punchlines.

Publishing Announcement for Blood Reigns

This is an announcement I've been dreading and I regret to inform you of an announcement on my publishing schedule. Not just for the book I had due out next week, but for the upcoming months.

Due to issues with illness and life, I unfortunately had no choice but to cancel the release of Blood Reigns (Yuri Sorenson Book 2). At this time I am unable to put out a book that I can be proud of. With the current climate and high stress I have been forcing the creation of the book. Being able to publish it and have it stand up to the pride I took in the first book is impossible at this time.

When it comes to the stories I write, I need my readers to connect with the characters I create and even I am having a hard time doing so. The story is forced in areas and if I can tell, my long term readers would definitely be able to notice. I can't do that.

So, over the next few weeks or so, I need to focus on my physical and mental health. Stress and severe depression has taken its toll on my immune system.

This decision was not made without punishment. Due to cancelling the preorder I have been barred from scheduling one through Amazon for the next year. I will send them an email and explain the situation but doubt that they will reverse the decision.

All preorders in all markets should be cancelled, Amazon will be sending out an email and won't be charging you for the preorder. If you purchased the title through Kobo or Barnes & Noble, please contact them for a refund if you are charged in error.

I deeply regret this decision and know that I've disappointed readers who've looked forward to catching up with Yuri and Josh. This was the best decision for myself and readers as the story I've written is sub-par and nowhere near ready for release.

Apologies,

J.M. Dabney

When Your Family Hates You, but Loves You for Your Lie

I don’t specifically talk about my politics. I vote. I study. I make informed decisions. As an author it’s quite common to be told not to be political. Just write and shut up. Politics and religion are a downer. But in the political climate and the crescendo of panic building to the next election there’s something that bothers me more than anything.
My family hates me. Well, maybe not in the sense of personal hate, but everything about me. And that’s what I wanted to write this post about. I have a few members of my family on my social media accounts. I usually snooze them, so I don’t see the hatefulness they have for me.

Don't Use Me as an Example: A Short Essay

Although, I’ve done this publishing thing a time or two, but I’ll tell everyone, or anyone who asks don’t use me as an example for this writing game. Everyone has their process—what works for them. I’ve told the story before, but it bears repeating, when I was eight I wrote the worst poem in literary history, but my love of writing formed. My mother wanted me to grow up to be an investigative journalist. We both quickly realized I wasn’t diplomatic enough for it. Although she was sure she’d see me on TV one day she just hoped it wasn’t in handcuffs. My Evil One aka Mommie Dearest aka Lifegiver always had the sweetest opinion of my personality.

But I digress. I grew up loving the written word, the way authors compose these perfectly imperfect symphonies of words, sentences, and paragraphs. Authors who paint mentally picturesque landscapes for us to disappear into. I’ve written before that I jotted down short stories in my notebooks with the dream of publishing a story someday. Anne Rice, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Patterson, I wanted to see my name on the cover of a book gracing the shelves of a bookstore. My dad’s parents were voracious readers and I spent weekends at their house growing up. Every night it became a habit to curl up before going to sleep and read. I read everything from pulp detective novels to true crime serial killers. I was way too young for those types of stories, but my love of reading wasn’t stilted because of that.

Romance Body Positivity and Diversity in 2020: a Short Essay

Let me back up a few years and tell you where it all started, I came out as lesbian later in life. I lived with my internalized homophobia. I lived with these words in my head it’s good for everyone else but that’s just not me. While I choked on my jealousy of others being out and proud. I self-destructed on whatever drugs I could make disappear up my nose or however much alcohol I could get down until I reached the bliss of blackouts. I make no apologies for the past. I can’t change what I’ve done; all I can do is accept it and pledge to myself to do better.

For decades of my life I was too fat, too depressed, too manic or whatever the fuck the weekly stigma was to elicit self-loathing. I wrote my dreams on the lined pages of well-worn notebooks. Swearing to myself that I’d never share the stories I hid. Then one day I started posting them anonymously online. Saving myself from the inevitable trolling that the internet is famous for.

New Release Warmth of his Light by Frey Ortega

Blurb:
When Eos Hawthorne went to meet a friend one evening, he never expected his entire life to change. As if stumbling across a group of men fighting in an abandoned lot by his home wasn’t shocking enough—one of those men suddenly attacks him...with fangs and claws.

Vampire coven leader Julien Blanchard is having a bad day. After failing to apprehend a murderer and traitor to his coven, the absolute last thing he needed was a hapless human stumbling into the picture— especially an intriguing young man who, as it turns out, happens to be his mate.

Eos doesn't know if he believes in mating, and knows nothing about the supernatural world he is suddenly thrust into. Julien is a vampire who has always put his coven and his duty first.

Will their burgeoning love be enough to see Eos safely through the dangers he finds himself in? And even more so, can it make the cold-blooded Julien relinquish control and embrace Eos, and the warmth of his light?

Warmth of His Light is the first book of the Blanchard Coven series. It is M/M, HEA, and complete at 61,287 words.
Available for Kindle Unlimited

Excerpt:
Eos took a couple of steps back, almost as though he were right there in the midst of the action. He didn’t see anything else but the indistinct silhouette of bodies moving that he’d forgotten about the alley behind him, thinking he was about to get slashed at. Eos took a couple of steps back…and managed to hit his back loudly against what seemed to be a rather empty dumpster with a loud clang.
Well, it was mostly empty—except for a cat that gave an irritated yowl at being disturbed. It promptly sprung out at Eos, surprising him and making him jump.
“Shit!” Eos cussed. He twisted away, but his center of gravity was messed up by the sudden cat-attack and the fact that he had forgotten there was even a dumpster there at all. Eos fell flat on his rear right beside the dumpster…which he now noticed was leaking underneath.
But thank God I didn’t trip into the puddle of…whatever the hell that is. Eos wretched, fighting down the urge to barf.
Eos grimaced and not just because of the unidentified liquid dripping from underneath the dumpster that he was almost about to touch. Maybe the worst thing about this entire situation was that he had dropped his burger and soda, and now they were all over the concrete floor. Little cubes of ice splattered all over the now-very-wet pavement, some of which soaked into the wrapper of the once-pristine burger. He furrowed his eyebrows and frowned as he looked at what was supposed to be a nice little midnight snack.
“What a waste,” he muttered, and wobbled up to his feet. Eos checked himself for any scrapes or wounds, but aside from a sore butt and a bruised ego at being caught unaware by a cat, he was fine.
When Eos looked up, however, he’d noticed that the men he was eavesdropping on had stopped whatever they were doing and were now looking at him. Now, with their eyes trained on him, he could actually see their features more clearly.
They all suddenly had crimson-colored eyes, the color of blood, and the only reason Eos noticed was because they shone for the briefest moment when they trained their eyes on him. Didn’t one of them have blue eyes, earlier? And another had green ones, the color of forest foliage. The lanky one who was being surrounded had his teeth bared. No, not teeth—fangs.
Eos gulped. “Holy shit.”
Not only were the men blurs when they moved and fought, but they were…demonic blurs. Beastly blurs. Sexy, unsettling, demonic blurs.
That’s when he realized that the lanky, cornered man—with the eyes of a blood-crazed beast, the fangs of a demon, and the frenzy of an animal with nothing to lose—had broken through the three of them, and was now running straight for Eos.
As Eos closed his eyes and curled into a ball, one final thought came into his head…
I knew I shouldn’t have left the house today.

Bipolar & the Seven Deadly Sins: A Manic Essay

The first panic attack I ever remembered having I think I was around twelve. The details of the triggers or the event itself are hazy. But, oh, how I remember my current ones. I lose time as if I’m outside myself. My brain a misfiring of billions of neurons, I recognize them for the way my skin feels. It’s like it’s not…mine. Foreign and cumbersome, almost like a cheap suit that’s too tight and the legs too short. Millions of bugs crawling beneath my skin. I pick, scratch, attempt to hurt myself for it to go away. It’s only when I skip my count, my prayer beads don’t spin as smoothly as I roll them between trembling thumb and forefinger that the rage starts.

Hallucinations form with the building crescendo of every labored breath—each more ragged and painful than the one before it. Time ceases and I’m frozen, skinning the flesh from my arm, setting myself on fire, removing fingers, and driving 100 miles per hour into oncoming traffic and it doesn’t stop. Seconds, minutes, maybe an hour goes by and I’m back, yet always a piece missing. I know I should feel terrified, no, horrified at what my mind devises for me. Yet I’m not.

The Year of Body Positivity and Diversity and Beyond

This year marked three years of sobriety, and six years of being off drugs. My mental health has taken hits left and right, but as the years progress I learn to adapt to my brain’s needs. We work together like a dysfunctional team and at this point in my life I couldn’t be happier with where I’m at. Yes, things could be better. Yet I won’t complain because it could be so much worse. While I still think about alcohol and drugs daily, my darker thoughts are fewer and farther between. Days can pass without thought of self-harm. Again, I have adapted to my brain’s, shall we say, eccentricities.

2018 has turned into an amazing year. I lived my dream of writing full-time and while I believe my time is limited in that aspect I enjoyed the months with nothing but words to toil away upon. There is no way to thank my readers enough for reading my stories and embracing bodies in all their shape and sizes, shades. When I branded myself as a body positive author to describe the characters I wrote, but it was a label I always wore no matter the tales I told.

Depression, Failing Self-Care & What's Left

It could be the holidays or just my usual mental state, but depression has been nipping at my heels for months. Several weeks ago, it sunk its teeth in and hasn’t let me go. I believe mental illness shouldn’t come with a stigma—some stupid reason we shouldn’t speak up.

As an Atheist, I’m not big on holidays or what they mean. Christianity pillaged pagans for their traditions, whatever, but it’s around this time everyone gets a bit down. We don’t have family to spend it with for whatever reason. It highlights our anti-social tendencies. Whatever it is, holidays just seem to exacerbate the shifting of our moods.

I don’t think that’s what has me down. Spending days in bed to awaken and just turn back over because I’m tired of existing. A week ago, I had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital, my panic attack didn’t come on with that annoying tightening of my chest and the bugs crawling beneath my skin. The nosebleed which isn’t a normal part of my attacks. It hit me like a sledgehammer and I had no way of controlling it. All the counting, visualization, none of it worked and I let others see the weakness.

The Struggle of Being an Inferior Storyteller

I debated long and hard about writing this post, but I had a need to get my thoughts out. If I deemed to post it than that’s why you’re reading it now. Let me start at the beginning, when I started this creative process of putting words to paper. Yes, I started writing back in the day when it was nothing but notebooks and those chunky word processors. Not everyone had a computer or internet, that was mainly for libraries and school computer labs.

I fell in love with the written word early in life due to my dad’s parents. I’d go to their house every weekend or every other, each night they’d lie down in bed before going to sleep to read and it was the start of a lifelong habit. Yet I didn’t read kid books, they loved detective stories and horror. I don’t know if I even understood them or the words, but I remembered loving them. It was getting lost in worlds where the good guy always won. I developed a fascination with Zane Grey and the mystique of the old west.

When people ask when I knew I wanted to be a writer, I always say at 8 when I wrote the worst poem know to the literary world. And maybe it did start there, but my life changed with one book. Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs. He created a gritty world with all the nastiness and horror, surreal and realism combined. All I knew is I wanted to write one day. Be a published author.

Body Positivity/Diversity and Me

I've mentally planned this post and, also, rethought it hundreds of times. To start, let me explain a few things and why body positivity means so much to me not only as a person but also as an author. Picture if you will, a thirteen year old girl with already crippling body issues suddenly develops curves she's not ready for. She becomes painfully aware of the glances or outright stares she receives in gym class running laps. Those looks that follow the up and down motion as if watching a tennis match laying down. Said girl is fat and to her at that moment being fat, being female is one of the worst things she can imagine. How would that shape a persons body image for later in life? I'll answer that: badly.

The Body Positive Movement isn't anything new its just garnered more attention as models of size make themselves more visible. It's visible for the fact that body image shapes more than how we view ourselves but others as well. Those thoughts exist as a reflection of the insults we force upon ourselves, we use as judgements of others and what we say whether verbally or mentally about the way a person should be.

BLURB

Insanity was in the eye of the beholder.

Harmon Little was a surveillance expert. He lived in the shadows, and he liked it there. There wasn’t a place he couldn’t get in and out of without detection. As usual with his mischievous nature, his current assignment went south, and he ran. He thought he was free and clear until he knocked someone over in a grocery store aisle.

Sanity wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

Solomon “Solo” Poe was counting calories. Working out until he fell into bed hungry and exhausted. He was plain and pudgy, plus he couldn’t remember when he’d last gone on a date. He wanted more than the occasional, lights out, one-night stand. So, he was going to lose the weight and find himself a man. At least that was the plan, then a big man with a huge smile tried to kill him in a store aisle. There was one thing he was sure of, Harmon was his.

THIS TITLE CONTAINS VIOLENCE THAT SOME READERS MAY FIND OBJECTIONABLE.

EXCERPT

“Talk to me.”

“I like you.”

He didn’t know how he felt about the misery that stained those three words.

“I like you too. So what's wrong?”

Harmon didn’t speak just seemed to choke down the rest of his food, and he did the same. He stood and started to clear the table. He froze with the plates in his hands as Harmon grabbed his hips. He dropped them back onto the table with a clang and let the big man tug him down onto his lap. Harmon’s fingertips stroked across his cheek.

“You smell so sweet.” Harmon’s voice broke.

He closed his eyes as the tip of Harmon’s nose moved along his jaw and down to the side of his neck. A shiver worked through him.

“So soft.”

He felt a tug on his bow tie, and then Harmon started to work the buttons of his shirt loose.

“May I just touch you?”

He turned his head, his mouth met Harmon’s, and the man’s scruff was rough against his smoother skin. He realized with awe that he wasn’t the only one shaking. Harmon’s breath roughly shuddered over his lips. Harmon held himself so tense that his muscles strained and shook.

“Poe, please.”

Something about the begging tone tinged with too much desperation broke him. Harmon shouldn’t believe he had to plead for affection or the right to touch. As far as he was concerned, everything he was belonged to Harmon.

“Yes.”

Harmon’s big hand slipped under the soft linen of his shirt. Harmon squeezed and stroked, pinched his nipples. The man didn’t hurry. It was almost as if Harmon savored the moments as if that would be the only time he’d allow Harmon to touch him. He wanted more than a make-out session or some one-night stand. They’d only known each other a few months, but he felt closer to Harmon than he had to anyone else in his life.

Taking chances hadn’t always worked in his favor, but he didn’t want to bypass the possibility of a relationship with Harmon because he was scared of ruining a friendship. He’d seen the interest and heat in Harmon’s eyes as the man studied him. Noticed all the aborted attempts at touching him. Harmon had reached out to him so many times only to stop himself and pull away in every way. The emotional retreat hurt him the most.

“I love touching. Do you want to touch me?”

He frowned at the fearful question. Harmon waited for him to say no and he had no intention of doing that. He stood, and the devastation on Harmon’s face broke his heart.

“Take your shirt off, Harmon.” Harmon hesitated, and he wasn’t having that. “Now.”

Harmon’s hands trembled as they picked apart the buttons of the wrinkled shirt he wore. He groaned as Harmon exposed his dark skin covered with thick curls. He cataloged scars and a single mole on his right shoulder. The man was physically perfect, and he still didn’t understand why Harmon wanted him.

He wasn’t going to question it because above everything—including his fear—he wanted to love on this sweet, adorable and insecure man. He didn’t close the distance between them until Harmon dropped the shirt to the floor. He moved in close until he pushed his knees against Harmon’s and the man parted his legs. He stepped between them.

He let his gaze move over Harmon from his bright jade eyes down to the man’s fisted hands on his thick thighs. He raised his right hand and pulled his tie off, and he held it out to Harmon.

“Do you want it?”

Harmon quickly grabbed it and tucked it into the pocket of his jeans. Hiding it as if he’d take it away. He felt powerful and sexy at the heat of Harmon’s gaze observing his every movement. The curve of his belly, the slight softness of his chest didn’t matter as he removed his shirt. He dropped it. No one had ever looked at him the way Harmon was doing.

He brought his hands to Harmon’s scruffy cheeks and bent forward until his mouth touched Harmon’s.

Harmon sat stiffly with his hands still clenched on his thighs.

“Don't you want to touch me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why aren't you?”

For the first time, he didn't feel insecure about his weight, softness or his thick-framed glasses. Harmon waited for his permission or orders. It was a powerful knowledge.

“I don't want you to go away.”

“I'm not going anywhere, baby,” he whispered before he took Harmon’s lips.
